Teaching Format: This is a 7-day residential course which includes a combination of lecture, discussion, experiential practices, practice counselling sessions through role play and reflection, and 15 hours of home study practicum.

This program includes specialised exercises, introspection, practice counselling sessions, and faculty feedback. Part of the training is focused on learning about oneself– strengths and weaknesses, and reactions to different situations. This is to encourage svādhyāya with reference to yogic scriptural teachings in the Bhagavad Gita, the Vedas, the Upanishads, Patanjali’s Sutras, and the Tantras. With developed and mature self-knowledge, when students counsel others they can remain even-minded and neutral because of their self-study and introspection. This module is last in the training so that students have the opportunity to integrate the teachings in the prerequisite modules and apply these to the art and spiritually-mature skill of spiritual counselling.

Some unique aspects in this module are:

  • Training students in ecological consciousness and aligning true health with the health of the earth;
  • Examining chakra development and how this relates to the study of character structures and Western psychological models;
  • Areas of overlap and alignment between spiritual counselling and the use of yogic techniques, and certain areas of psychotherapy.

Students deepen their knowledge and understanding of how to counsel others effectively to help reveal and develop the divine nature of their students. The aspect of faith and trust in a higher power is also presented and discussed, to help students re-evaluate and clarify personal belief systems and their relationship with the divine. Awareness and skills developed throughout the Sat Sangat Yoga Therapy training enable the yoga therapist to function more effectively and sensitively. This module is essential for further study in specialist training courses that therapists wish to undertake after qualifying as a yoga therapist.
